Nebbiolo needs time, and this is certainly true for a successful vintage like 2015. With Prima Nebbia, Rocche dei Barbari shows how beautifully Nebbiolo develops when given the peace and quiet it needs, without being confined to heavy oak structures but developing naturally.

This wine is made from 100% Nebbiolo, sourced from Piedmont in the Langhe, Italy. The style is classic and artisanal: the focus is on pure fruit, refinement, and natural maturation. At Rocche dei Barbari, the wines are slowly aged in old, neutral wooden barrels and concrete, ensuring that the grape and the terroir remain central. Prima Nebbia matures for several years in the cellar before being released to the market, which gives the wine extra layering and harmony.

What you then see in your glass is deep ruby red with light brick-red edges that reveal its maturity. On the nose, ripe black cherries, violets, and black tea, complemented by earthy notes, damp forest floor, and a hint of mushroom. On the palate, it is refined, with velvety tannins, fresh acidity, and a beautiful structure. The finish is long, elegant, and slightly savoury.

This is something special, this is Nebbiolo with calmness and depth. Not youthful exuberance, but balance, complexity, and suppleness. The 2015 shows how beautifully Nebbiolo can mature without losing its character. Dishes that pair well with this wine include anything with mushrooms or truffle, veal, poultry, risotto, or classic Northern Italian cuisine. Also wonderful with autumnal dishes.
