Blaauwklippen Chardonnay 2023

After nearly thirty years of absence, Chardonnay returned to Blaauwklippen in 2023. The historic Stellenbosch wine estate's last Chardonnay was made in 1993. Thirty years later, winemaker Narina Cloete decided to breathe new life into this classic grape. The result proves that the wait was more than worth it.

Blaauwklippen, founded in 1682 and thus the oldest wine estate in Stellenbosch, is known for combining tradition with innovation. That philosophy comes through beautifully in this Chardonnay, which makes an immediate impression with enticing aromas of ripe peach, cream and citrus blossom, complemented by subtle notes of lemon and orange blossom.

In the glass, this Chardonnay immediately shows why Blaauwklippen brought it back after thirty years. Ripe notes of peach and citrus are combined with a creamy structure and a subtle minerality. Eleven months of maturation on French oak adds extra depth and elegance, without the oak taking over. The result is a rich, full-bodied Chardonnay with a long, soft finish.

What we find so appealing about this wine is the balance. It has the body and mouthfeel that many Chardonnay lovers look for, but remains lively and refined thanks to its fresh acidity. Delicious with fragrant Thai and Indian curries, grilled tuna, seafood, poultry or rich fish dishes.
