A Cap Classique that manages to surprise even experienced wine lovers.
Cap Classique is South Africa's sparkling wine. And while almost all Cap Classiques revolve around Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, we've discovered one made from Zinfandel. Zinfandel is known worldwide primarily as the grape for powerful red wines, but Blaauwklippen shows that this remarkable grape can also shine in a sparkling wine.

The historic wine estate Blaauwklippen, founded in 1682 and thus the oldest wine estate in Stellenbosch, was in 1977 the first South African producer to plant Zinfandel. That pioneering spirit can still be tasted in this unique Méthode Cap Classique.

Although this wine is not a rosé, the Zinfandel grape gives it a subtle salmon-coloured glow and refined notes of strawberry, redcurrant and raspberry. After the grapes are hand-picked, they are processed immediately and undergo a very gentle pressing to preserve the aromas. Thanks to the second fermentation in the bottle according to the traditional Méthode Cap Classique (the same method used to make Champagne), fine, elegant bubbles develop along with subtle nuances of brioche and freshly baked bread.

The taste is fresh, lively and refined, with a beautiful balance between red fruit, citrus and a mineral finish. Just a bit more exciting than a classic sparkling wine made from Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, without losing any elegance. This wine pairs well with oysters, shellfish, sushi, light starters, or as a festive aperitif.

What makes this bubbly truly special is its rarity. Very few producers in the world use Zinfandel for sparkling wine. This makes it a wine for curious explorers and enthusiasts who enjoy something different in their glass than the well-known classics.

Why we're excited about this wine
This wine tells exactly the kind of story we love: a centuries-old winemaking tradition combined with something innovative. The result is an elegant South African Cap Classique with character, a subtle nod to rosé, and a grape you rarely encounter in a sparkling wine.
